Welcome!

The Friesens’ Yearbook Cover Design process is the easiest way to get your cover professionally designed. We’ll meet one-on-one for a 60-minute session via Zoom or your platform of choice. Here’s what’s possible during our session together:

  • Review yearbook theme and any existing design concepts
  • Consult on design direction including cover elements and typography
  • Begin preliminary cover layout – due to time constraints we will develop as much of the cover as possible
  • Provide any final assets reviewed for advisor to finalize cover layout

The Specifics

Each session includes design consultation, layout/design (as time permits), and delivery of assets for front/back/spine design for one cover layout. Endsheet, page layout, mastheads, etc., are not included. Every effort will be made to provide a layout with assets usable throughout the design of the yearbook and its relevant theme. Additional scheduling changes or sessions will incur additional fees; additional cover layouts and design to finalize cover may be contracted through Burney Design Co. Upon determining the scope of the additional design work, BDCo., will provide an estimate for review and approval prior to starting work. All work bills through Friesens unless other arrangements have been made.

The Process

At the beginning of your scheduled session, we will take a few minutes to review your theme and the inspiration or source of your theme. From here, if there are existing layout ideas, we’ll start to explore sourcing art (stock, etc.) and discuss typography. If we’re starting from scratch, we’ll discuss the elements needed on the cover and how the theme can be used to incorporate those pieces.

We may discuss how the theme relates to the cover and ways to carry your design elements throughout your spreads, endsheets, title pages, etc. The color palette will be established, as well as typography. Depending on your platform, we will work with Friesens selection of fonts available via ConnectMe or with Adobe Fonts included in your Adobe CC subscription.

As our design progresses, we’ll see the cover design come together using the assets, fonts and design elements that we’ve discussed. Depending on our time frame, hopefully we’re close to finalizing your cover, setting up the spine text, adding some content or elements to the back cover. Our goal is to get as close as possible to your final cover within the time allotted for our session.

The final production aspect of your cover occurs after our session. The rough edges are polished and any adjustments or edits we discussed are applied. Press-ready, production artwork is delivered to your Friesens representative. You will receive a 3D mockup of your cover along with flat artwork – ideal for promoting yearbook sales. Any additional assets discussed for use throughout your book will also be provided.

If artwork, additional illustration, or changes are required after session, a quote will be provided for additional services. This quote will need to be approved before additional work is started.
